Higher Tariffs Mean Justice-impacted Individuals Suffer More
Concertina Wired Shorts
With the new tariffs being bandied about by the American President, I predict that we incarcerated millions and those who love and care for us are in for additional suffering as companies like HIG Capital (DBA Keefe Commissary Network) gear up for even greater price hikes that won't receive any relief.
For example:
Right now, a pack of Maruchan Ramen, any flavor, is $1.17 in Florida's private prisons. Keefe likely has a proviso in the contract they hold with the Florida Department of Corrections that states they can exceed a 10% increase on a price hike "in times of great need", and they'll gladly do so as some of our canteen items come from out of country.
I've only been here at Blessington two years, and it's already been done once -- what stops them from doing it (us) again?
From March 2023 to right now, the price of Maruchan Ramen here has increased three times, starting from 71¢: 78¢, $1.06, $1.17.
If you spotted the anomaly, thank you.
Let me make this worse as reminders:
Jobs in prison rarely pay -- in a community of 1880-ish people, I would be amazed if there are 30 paying jobs here.
Where do the rest of us get our money?
Our people on the outside, who sacrifice so bloody much for us, do just as much time as us, and get fleeced by profiteering and boneheaded moves coming and going.
I am not looking forward to $6 sticks of antiperspirant, nor the return of $2.80 saltine sleeves. I'd not be amazed if Magic Shave takes a $1.00 price hike, either. A two pack of AAA or AA batteries is already north of $3.00 before tax -- why not shove it to $4 with tax so that people really can't afford to listen to their radios or use their foil shavers around here?
Oh, wait. I've run out of kvetchup here, and I can't afford another bottle. :')
