End of an Era: No More IKEA Catalogs by Mail

Recently, I asked of my cohort: Can an IKEA Catalog be requested from IKEA, with them mailing it to me, please?

Why would someone in prison request a store catalog?

You would be surprised at the reasons. In my case, it's because I was drawing a floor plan for a small home idea that I had. The home would be 480 sq. ft., comprised of two 20'×8' shipping containers on a concrete pad, with an 8' gap between the 20' sides. The gap gets closed in with walls and a roof, as if to emulate a third shipping container sitting in this 'middle' that this placement has made.

What I wanted was furniture measurements, so that I can ensure that what I intend to do with the rooms is feasible and practical for a household of one or two people without children. I remember IKEA's catalogs having measurements inside for people who need to know if that VIKA FURUSKOG desk will fit in their 8'×6' office space (and yes, it would fit in either orientation in the office, but one will likely be more comfortable than the other).

Ah, well.

A dearth of data, with plentiful imagination.

The more I sit on the idea, and the more information I get for everything else, the better it seems, to the point that I would actually change up the footprint of the home.

I got a calculation of acres to square feet -- about 43,500 of them. I needed to convert to a number I can use, which is represented by the question "how many feet on x times how many feet on z equals this big number?"
The number, incidentally, was about 208.56 feet in both directions.
I figure that for the personal project that I wanted to build on, I truly do not need a full acre of land -- 1/6th of an acre would do quite well for starters. Six home properties, allotted 1,000 square feet of land each, and 1,250 square feet reserved for a driveway and parking area...

Huh, sounds a lot like the cottages that were built on a road in my home city!

We could certainly use more of those in more places, especially if they're made to be affordable.

Alas, for now, I'm going to have to take the long way through this and guess at some furniture measurements, ask for others.
The loss of the paper catalog is yet another loss of autonomy for those of us who are behind the wires, and people like me on the other side of the wires drove that decision.

I like the idea of reducing paper use, until I don't.
